Massage for Physical and Mind-Body Stress

Tech Stress occurs in two forms
  • First:  ergonomic, excess attention, keyboard and visual stress
  • Second:  excess development time in an online environment

Ergonomic

People who sit at a computer screen and keyboard incur common structural stress to their brain and body, including pronounced constriction to:

  1. Attention regions of the frontal brain
  2. Eye muscles, jaw, neck and shoulder, and lower back
  3. Over thinking, hyper visual

Onsite massage is one of the best, most popular remedies for this ergonomic issue.  And FYI - a massage table is vastly superior than a massage chair to unlock this tech stress (see below).

Excess Online Development

Excess online development time can be complicated and can be more costly.  Too much development time in cyber-space can cause you to create a product that is disconnected from real world, physical solutions for your customers.  If your team is excessively sitting at a computer designing products, they run the risk of getting too 'heady, logical and rational' and  dissociating from their own body.

This heady, cognitive orientation is heightened under a fast paced, high-stress, challenging business environment - especially in the technology intense companies, where employees are glued to their screen. In this situation, there is a tendency to:
  1. Over think
  2. Focus on parts versus whole systems integration
  3. Lose empathy for others
  4. Isolate from relationships with team members

Human factors are at the core of all business operations, product and user experience design.   These factors are deeper than cognitive behavior,  specifically to the visceral layer of anatomy and physiology.

Customers and prospects experience your product with their whole body, not just their brain and cognition. Therefore, you need to stay grounded and centered to relate to your customer’s real world.  This is the core of user centered design.

  •  Advantages of a Massage Table versus a Massage Chair

General: For either a massage chair or massage table the participant remains fully clothed.

The most effective way to maximize the comfort and satisfaction of the client, as well as maximize the amount of time they are receiving a massage, is to use a massage table, not a massage chair.

    Massage Tables are Superior

    1. People can get onto and off of a massage table more quickly (10 seconds).
    2. People settle and relax more easily and quickly on a table.
    3. A person’s body is more physically flexible on a massage table, allowing faster and more effective stress relief.
    4. A massage table accommodates more body shapes and sizes than a massage chair.
    5. Massage tables allow the participant to receive faster and more effective treatment:
      1. De-stress is faster and more effective: tables allow more effective access to the primary physical locations of stress on the body than do massage chairs. This includes the neck and shoulders, and especially the lower back.
      2. The participant can breath more fully into their ribs, belly, lower spine when on a table. This enhances their treatment. Massage chairs constrict the ribs and spine and restrict a full breath.
      3. Whole body relaxation and integration techniques are more effective on a table, such as, connective tissue release, myo-facial release and cranial sacral techniques.
      4. Blood circulation is significantly enhanced. This occurs because the muscles are more fully relaxed and limber on a table, whereas the massage chair inhibits movement of the muscles and skeletal system
    6. Massage chairs are better for all length of onsite massage – 10 minutes to an hour.
    7. For women in skirts. Massage tables are more comfortable for women wearing either short skirts or long dresses. When lying on a table, the massage therapist covers their legs with a sheet. For women in dresses, sitting on a massage chair requires them to hike up their skirt to straddle the chair – this can be awkward.
    8. Note: the participant relaxes more fully when on the table, so when they stand up they can be more ‘wobbly’. Therefore, it is helpful for the massage therapist to support them to find their physical balance before returning to work.

    Massage Chairs are Inferior

    1. With a massage chair, due to their design, it can take up to 60 seconds or longer to adjust each of the components of the chair to fit the needs of each unique client – this wastes time.
    2. Massage chairs constrain the body in a narrow posture, and allow a limited range of motion for the client.
    3. It takes longer for the client to relax, and their body does not relax as fully.
    4. Massage chairs allow reasonable access to the neck, shoulders and arms of the participant. Massage chairs only allow limited access to the mid and lower back, and legs.
    5. Some people report numbness/legs falling asleep after being in a massage chair for 20-30 minutes. Massage chairs are good for shorter sessions, such as 10-15 minutes sessions.    Tables are good for both short and long sessions.
    6. Some clients and massage therapists refer to a massage chair as a ‘pretzel chair’ as it twists you into a fixed position for the massage.

Two advantage of a massage chair

A massage table provides all of the features of a massage chair except for two.

    1. For every 100 people, approximately one person will choose the massage chair.

This is because of issues of modesty. The person simply does not want to lie That is ok. In general, a brief conversation with the massage therapist supports them to lay on the table to receive the massage.

Consequently, having both a table and a chair available one solutions, yet requires more effort from the massage therapist to transport and set up both.

Sending information to participants before the day of the massage should state this fact and that the participant has the opportunity to choose a table or a chair. Either is fine.

    1. Physical Space requirement: Massage table needs more physical room than a massage chair.   The massage table is 6’ long and 30” wide.   A table requires a minimum of 5’ x 8’ space. Chairs need 4’ by 4’.

    Human Resources issue to address:

The Human Resources manager should assess the work environment to determine if a massage table is appropriate. It might not fit your culture.   Sending the participants the link to this page is helpful information.

From my experience, in the Bay Area, 99% of the people prefer a massage table, usually 100%.
