Massage - Mind Body – Somatics - Trauma Bodywork

River of Light Massage & Healing provides several services spanning across traditional massage, mind-body-somatics sessions, and trauma bodywork.  This document will help you understand these services.

Together, we will identify the best approach for you to achieve your goals, and potentially the progression of sessions, that will support you to achieve your goals.  If your desire for massage and bodywork are in part motivated by health concerns, or combinations of current and/or past stressors in your life, then mind-body-somatic skills become more useful and valuable to achieve your goals.

Please review this document.  In our first session we will discuss this further.  Our goal is to create a plan that supports you.  Be it relaxation, or more involved resolution of stress and trauma held in your body.

Each of these areas uses related, integrated principles and methods.  In general, they vary depending upon the degree of participation and internal engagement that you want to incorporate into your sessions.  They range from none at all, to deep self-awareness and actualization.

Also, these different methods can be used based upon your goals for the session:

  • Is your interest simple stress relief and relaxation?
  • Do you have stress related health issues?
  • Do you have other current stress issues that affect your life, you relationships, your job?
  • Do stressful events from your past disrupt you in the present?

This document is a brief description of these areas.  We will further discuss these areas in your first session so that you can decide which blend of styles supports you.

Services are rendered based upon a 'sliding scale' fee.

Sliding scale means that you decide how much to pay within the range provided based upon your appreciation and your ability to pay.  For your session, there is a range that you can pay.

For a Trauma Bodywork session, a 2.0 hours session is recommended to give time for the various stages of the emotional and physical experiential process. A 1.5 hour session is also okay, we will simply be more brief with some of the sections of the session.

Traditional Massage

The benefits of massage are many, primarily relaxation, calm, composure, and a sense of integration.  In general, massage is a technique for the muscles, skeletal system, connective tissue, and for flows of energy in the body.

Generally, in the massage industry, a massage is a passive activity for the client, meaning that you lie still and silent as you receive the massage.  The massage therapist is generally silent during  massage.  This massage options is available for you at my studio..

To enhance your experience, I offer a simple style of an engaged, participatory massage, where during the course of the massage I verbally guide you into a relaxation process, and occasionally, encourage you to release stress with simple movements, breathing, and stress clearing skills.  These are simple mind-body skills.  This approach is more effective to achieve the benefits of massage.  We can discuss this further in your first appointment.

A traditional massage session is simple and straightforward, focusing on relaxation, pain relief, and integration..

  1. We start by clarifying your goals for the session.
  2. Then review your intake forms.
  3. Then discuss the benefits of a participatory, guided experience during your session.YOU choose either silent and non-participatory, or participatory.
  4. We then progress to the massage.
  5. I’ll follow up after a few days to check in with you.

A 90 minute traditional massage is allocated in the following portions:

  • 5 minutes check in to determine your needs and goals
  • 85 minutes table massage

Progressing from a traditional massage session to

‘Massage- Somatics-Wellness  or ‘trauma bodywork’ session.

It is possible that in the process of a traditional massage that deeper emotions can arise, such as  apprehensive, fearful, or anxiousness.  These and other emotions may might arise after the session as well.  This suggests that the traditional massage triggered an unexpected stress response with in you.

At times, clients can start off receiving a traditional massage, then over the course of time, incorporate more mind-body-somatic elements into their massage sessions.  And even, explore aspects of trauma resolution within their sessions.

Therefore, either during the massage or during the next session, we discuss how to recognize if ‘something’ is arising, and how to transform the experience into a positive experience.

Massage- Somatics-Wellness

There are two approaches to a Massage- Somatics-Wellness , you decide which approach is most supportive for you:

First, the session includes all of the elements of the traditional massage and adds mind-body-somatic elements into the massage session.

Second, the Massage- Somatics-Wellness  session does not include massage, or only a small amount of massage.

Somatics, is a general term used to describe processes of being, presence or internal awareness that are deeper in the body then cerebral thinking and feeling states.    Somatics can, in general, also be called ‘mind-body skills’.   Both ‘somatics’ and ‘mind-body skills’ involve internal awareness skills, such as meditation, movement, breathwork, emotional awareness, body scanning, state generation, and expression. These support your journey inside yourself.  These skills are often used to support relaxation, stress relief, self-awareness, or improved health.

This approach facilitates emotional support and awareness.   You are supported go to a deep level of your mind and body to find:

- Wholeness

- Connection

- Life Force

- Flow

- Clarity

- Intuition

- Synchronicity

- Healing

- Expression

- Resilience

- and more!

The Massage- Somatics-Wellness  sessions help to identify stress and emotions held in the body.  The sessions  focus on positive cultivation of energy, catharsis and transformation facilitated by mind-body-somatic skills and experiences can include:

  1. Face to face conversation  to build an alliance and learn about your story.
  2. Meditation, guided awareness, progressive relaxation
  1. Guided energy cultivation, Chi Gong and Energy Work
  1. Voice, Sound, Singing and Breath
  2. Mind-body Integration Skills and Affirmation (Energetic and Verbalization)
  3. Guided Visualization and Imagery,
  4. Posture, Presence and Being
  5. Movement
  6. Memory recall and reframing
  7. Implementation and coaching
  8. And more!

The approach uses several tactics to help you become aware of the layers of, thinking, emotions, and sensations within yourself.   Elements of the session can be conducted sitting and discussing, sitting in Internal awareness and meditation, standing in a posture, standing and moving, or on the massage table receiving a range of touch and massage methods, including,  light touch, Swedish massage, or deep internal organ massage.   The guided awareness process, expression and discussion can also occur during the course of the massage, to understand and express the emotions or sensations that arise.

At the end of the session there is an integration component to help integrate your experience and implement new awareness, behavior and skill.

Trauma bodywork

A primary distinction between a trauma response and a stress response is that the individual experiences a distorted sense of self and time from a traumatic memory. In a trauma response, the person has an exaggerated respond in the present time primarily from their experience from the past.  A stress response is more narrow and limited and is a response to the present situation.

A trauma bodywork session includes all of the elements of the traditional massage session and mind-body-somatics session.  A trauma Bodywork session engages deeper, more profound emotional and memory experiences and processing then does the Massage- Somatics-Wellness session.  A trauma bodywork session does NOT have to include touch or massage.  It can be focused only upon mind-body-somatic skills and the resolution of trauma.

A central goal of trauma body work is to help you understand and transform internal stress-related sensations, beliefs, memories, behaviors and physical response to achieve better self-awareness, integration, coherence, positive emotions, calm and relaxation, improved health, recovery from physical accidents, to gain insight, and to support expression.   The central tactic of trauma bodywork is to help you be aware of your internal state, to regulate that state,  expression and catharsis. and to generate your desired internal state, and to achieve resolution.

Trauma  body includes discussion, inner emotional and felt sense experience, expression, and resolution.  Trauma bodywork includes a deeper journey of self-awareness, integration  and express then do the process of ‘mind-body-somatics’ described above.

Trauma bodywork requires a more full relationship between you and I, and involves a more elaborate and deeper quality of trust between us.
